Last week, LCIF Chairperson Sid Scruggs and staff members from our Foundation visited Lions providing disaster relief for tornado victims in Joplin. Although the tornado affected local Lions club members, they were among the first to help, cooking meals for displaced residents and relief workers. Lion Sandy Taylor told reporters, “We were exhausted, emotionally traumatized, but just being a small part of helping somebody move on was so self-fulfilling.”
Lions from across Missouri, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas and Pennsylvania are also volunteering their time to assist in the rebuilding efforts. Our members have worked with First Response to clear debris from dozens of homes sites in Joplin. Lions have also bought groceries and clothes during shopping trips with Lafayette House and Children’s Haven. In addition, Lions donated US$5,000 to the local school district to help provide supplies so the school year can begin on time.
All of these efforts are possible due to generous donations from Lions around the world. LCIF is providing US$60,000 for relief efforts in Joplin. And Lions across the U.S. have sent personal donations of US$80,000 to Lions in the Joplin area. There is still much work to do in Joplin, but our members are committed to helping their neighbors and friends rebuild their lives and homes.
