A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SANFORD LIONS CLUB

The SANFORD LIONS CLUB was organized in 1935 with twenty charter members, who are now all deceased, and was sponsored by the Raleigh Lions Club.
Around 1938, the SANFORD LIONS CLUB started to sponsor a Lee County Agricultural Fair. Shortly after World War II, some of the far-sighted members of the club arranged for the SANFORD LIONS CLUB to buy land on Colon Road. Over the years, additional land was purchased and many buildings were erected on what is now “Sanford Lions Club Fair Grounds” property.
The SANFORD LIONS CLUB has sponsored the following clubs, some from which other clubs have been sponsored: Pittsboro 11/11/37, Apex 11/18/37, Biscoe 7/15/38, Siler City 4/28/38, Aberdeen 9/9/38, Broadway 8/15/50, Coats 2/28/72 and Western Harnett 1998. In 2005 a Day Time club was formed. A Leo Club was formed for high school age youth of Lee County in 2007.
“We Serve” is the slogan for all Lions Clubs throughout the world. The Sanford Lions Club is an active group that serves the citizens of Lee County and the surrounding areas. While a focus on servicing the blind and hearing impaired is first priority, the Lions Club also serves through various other projects including Vision Screening; Aids for the visual and hearing impaired; Scholarships; Facility Use; Charitable Grants; Special Recreational opportunities; Boys and Girls Home Support; Christmas Cheer.
