A few short months ago, I challenged the Lions of the world to plant one million trees during my term as international president. Now, we’ve surpassed that goal by more than 500 percent. I’m delighted to hear each day about the clubs across the globe caring for the environment by planting trees.
When I recently traveled to Africa, I had the honor of planting a tree in the Nairobi City Park with Prince Hussain Aga Khan and the Kenyan Minister of the Environment and Mineral Resources the Hon. John Michuki.
Through a partnership with the Aga Khan Development Network, the Lions of Kenya will help plant 1.5 million trees in 2011 during the International Year of Forests. They will improve the environment in a country with one of the greatest rates of deforestation in Africa. Additionally, this project will provide income, opportunities and resources for some of the one billion forest-dependent people around the globe.
The Lions of Kenya show us what we can achieve when we believe.
