Our clubs have been fighting against blindness for decades. We introduced the white cane to the public to help people with visual impairments gain independence and immunized 41 million children in Africa against measles, a leading cause of childhood blindness and death. Now, we have won another victory: eliminating river blindness in Colombia.
River blindness, a parasitic disease also known as onchocerciasis, is the second-largest cause of blindness worldwide. Lions Clubs International Foundation is a leading partner in the fight against this disease and has given funding through SightFirst. By distributing drugs and educating communities, Lions helped Colombia become the first country in the Americas where people are suffering from river blindness to reach this goal.
