James Woodfin “Jim” Whitlock, III, 72 of E. Holly Grove Rd. Lexington, died Wednesday July 18, 2012 at Hinkle Hospice House.
The funeral service will be Saturday July 21, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ where he was a member, with Rev. Darrell Sluder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with firemen’s graveside rites conducted by the Davidson County Firemen’s Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends for 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington and at other times at the home on E. Holly Grove Rd.
Mr. Whitlock was born in Davidson County on January 22, 1940 to James Woodfin Whitlock, Jr. and Arteal Black Whitlock. He graduated from Central Davidson in 1958 and was retired auto mechanic with Community Service and Benny Swing Automotive. A member of Mt Tabor Church since 1970 where he served as Youth Leader, Deacon and Treasurer. He also served on Davis Townsend School Board for 8 years. His life passion was serving the Holly Grove Fire Department for 52 years where he served as Captain and Vice President of the Board of Directors and was named Fireman of the Year in 1980. He was a life member of Davis Townsend Lions Club with 40 years of service and was Lion of year 1974-1975 and a member of the Moose Lodge in Lexington and Spencer. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 4 years.
Surviving are his loving wife of over 50 years, Marie Leonard Whitlock of the home, daughters Onda Goins and husband Jeff and Nita Jarrett and husband Paul all of Lexington, seven devoted grandchildren James Goins and wife Lindsay, Stratton, Preston and Sarah Goins, Kayla, Noah and Sierra Jarrett and brother Gerald Whitlock and wife Wanda of Orlando, FL.
