OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS, SEPT. 19-21
Leadership often has the element of change as part of what we need to do as leaders. Just remember: The only person that welcomes a change is a baby with a wet diaper”
- Ed Hearn, ex NY met who played on the 1986 World Champion team opened the forum. Ed had a career ending shoulder injury, three life saving kidney transplants, dialysis, thirty radiation treatments for a bout with cancer and the aid of a breathing machine each night ( so we think we have it tough). He provided an inspirational talk for the group. He said that we should not dream about success but dream about “significance”. What can we do to make a difference in the lives of others? We should not be focused on self whether it is apathy or greed. Rather we should focus on “thinking outside the SELF”. It is much more rewarding. In a leadership position you can’t tell them how to be a leader, you need to show them. Be a farmer “Plant a Seed” and then watch it grow. Everybody can count the number of seeds in one apple but no one can count the number of apples from one seed. He concluded by leaving us two seeds 1)treat others with respect-count your blessings for what you have and 2) take action-find someone that is worse off than yourself and offer a hand.
Session with Barry Palmer, International President-mentioned that membership is looking better, we have 200 fewer drops this year than we did last year at the same time. Best place to look to start a new club is where a club has closed down in the last 5 years. He encouraged the District Governors and club presidents to use the Club Excellence Process to do an introspective look at their club. Club excellence process means for
-Each club to explore its leadership, membership, administration, service and communication. Make sure that we give recognition continuously.
-Probably the most informative and action oriented talk was by A P Singh, a Past International Director from India. He pressed the importance of PRIDE in wearing your Lions pin. If you are proud of wearing the pin and being a Lion, membership is not a problem. What the Lions do around the world is impressive but what we must be impressive at home. We need to grow the club in size, exposure and stature. We need to take care of 2 clubs—you take care of your club and I take care of my club. And there are two people responsible for the heath of your club, YOU and ME. If you are faced with a difficult challenge are problem, you have 3 choice, you can either 1) give up, 2) give in or 3) give it the best you can. After 1 year you either make history or will become part of history.
Social Media Presentation. Facebook or some other type of social media is important to get the Lions message out especially to younger members. If you want to learn how to start a facebook page go to www.lionssmile.org.

6. The Forum closed with a talk and performance from Patrick Henry Hughes. Patrick is a remarkable young man who was born without eyes and without the ability to fully straighten his arms and legs, making him unable to walk. Some of you may remember Patrick as he was featured on ESPN as he and his father were in the University of Louisville marching band. Patrick played the trumpet and his father pushed him in his wheelchair. Patrick wowed the Lions as a virtuoso pianist and vocalist. His father talked about their obstacles if they were real or imagined. He stressed how the family focused on their son’s abilities. The massage is “Learn how to accentuate the positives in your own life.” If you want to read a good book pick up a copy of Patrick’s , I AM POTENTIAL.
The next USA/Canada Leadersip Forum is in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sept 11-13, 2014. I encourage you to attend you will get a lot of good information for the session.
