The Council of Governors agreed to focus their year on Diabetes Awareness and Education. The State Diabetes Chairperson, Lion Judy Jackson, was energized and ready to work with the District Governors to move this project forward. The first part of this lion’s year has been spent on many hours of planning. However, on the last weekend in September all the District Governors, Council Chair, Bob Sprinkle and Council Secretary and Treasurer, Rhett White, the State Diabetes Awareness Chair and over 29 interested Lions from the coast to the mountains met to learn how to begin implementation as a pilot project. The goal is to have 2 clubs per district with 5 Lions per club (includes the Peer Support Leader). With 8 Districts participating, we will have a total of 80 people involved across the state.
The timeline to begin this Diabetes Awareness Peer Support (DAPS) program is November 1 and is to cover a 7 month period. The final step for this pilot program is to provide a report at the NC Lions State Convention in Asheville the last weekend in May 2014. Mark your calendars now to attend!
All Lions in attendance expressed special thanks to:
• Dr. Richard Davis, faculty member of UNC Department of Ophthalmology and the UNC Center for Diabetes Translation and Research, whose hard work and leadership has made the project possible.
• Two fantastic leaders, Patrick Tang and Liz Pilnik, from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and Dr. Edwin Fisher, Global Director of Peers for Progress at UNC. Patrick and Liz did a stellar job in both presenting information on what it takes to be an effective Peer Support Leader and on Diabetes in general.
• To the McLeansville Lions Club for use of their facilities both days and providing us healthy food and drink options!
Stay tuned for ongoing updates from your District Governors and the State Diabetes Chair, Judy Jackson! If successful this pilot year, we will be setting an example to others in our state, country and world, as there has never been a Peer Support Program implemented through an international civic organization! Let’s be the FIRST by making our Dreams a Reality through our individual service and commitment.
Let’s continue to DREAM BIG as our current International President, Barry Palmer has challenged! The dream of this project and the many dreams within our Lions clubs are worthy of our very best efforts.
Our motto WE SERVE is alive and well in North Carolina Lions!
